🚨 Common Scams at New Delhi Railway Station Targeting Tourists – What to Watch For

New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) is one of India’s busiest transit points, and unfortunately, also a hotspot for tourist-targeted scams. If you’re arriving here for the first time, stay alert and aware of these common frauds:

⚠️ 1. Fake Tourist Information Desks

How it works: Outside the station, you'll see small booths or offices labeled as “Tourist Information” or “Government Approved.” These are often fake and run by touts.

  • They pretend your train is delayed, canceled, or unavailable.

  • You’ll be pushed to book overpriced taxis, hotels, or fake tour packages.

How to avoid:
➡️ Only use official booths inside the station or book tours via authorized websites or verified travel apps.

⚠️ 2. “Your Hotel is Closed” Lie

How it works: Drivers or agents claim your pre-booked hotel has shut down or burned down. Then, they’ll “help” you find a new (more expensive, often poor-quality) hotel where they earn commission.

How to avoid:
➡️ Call your hotel directly. Never trust strangers' information.

⚠️ 3. Overpriced Car Rentals & Hidden Charges

How it works: You agree to a taxi/car hire for a fair price. Once you’re in the vehicle or halfway to your destination, they demand extra charges—fuel, tolls, driver fee, night charges.

How to avoid:
➡️ Book through apps like Ola, Uber, or India Taxi Online with fare breakdown in advance. Get everything in writing if booking locally.

⚠️ 4. Luggage Porters Demanding Huge Tips

How it works: A coolie (porter) may grab your bags without permission and then demand ₹500–₹1000 for short distances.

How to avoid:
➡️ Agree on a tip beforehand or carry your own bags if possible.

⚠️ 5. Fake “Police” or “Railway Officials”

How it works: Someone in uniform might ask for your passport or tickets and claim there’s a fine or security fee.

How to avoid:
➡️ Ask for ID, stay near CCTV/public areas, and never hand over your documents casually. Real officials are rarely stationed outside stations.

✅ Quick Tips to Stay Safe:

  • Use official prepaid taxi booths inside NDLS

  • Avoid any booking or “help” from people standing outside the station

  • Don’t share your travel plans or personal info with strangers

  • Keep valuables secure, preferably in a neck pouch or money belt

  • Use well-reviewed travel companies or hotel-arranged pickups
